DOG OF THE WEEK

Over the past several weeks, weve looked at the first Black and Tan, Bluetick, English, Plott, and Redbone to achieve the GRNITECHHOF title. Naturally, Treeing Walker would be next, but weve covered the first Treeing Walker to achieve the feat, who was the first GRNITECHHOF period (Hardys Fabous River Katie), in the first Dog of the Week segment ever, back in the 7th Edition. Later, we talked about the second Treeing Walker and second hound ever to achieve the GRNITECHHOF title (Wildman Sam I Am) back in the 17th Edition of the bulletin. So today, lets talk about the third Treeing Walker to achieve the title, which would have been the first after the title was introduced in 2019. That hound is GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Wichita Tree Slobern Stubby. Lets find out more about him.

Name: GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Wichita Tree Slobern Stubby
Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound
Date of Birth: 12/9/2015
Owned by: Paul Nichols of Arlington, KS
Bred by: Paul Nichols
Three-Generation Pedigree:
--- GRNITECH GRCH'PR'WICHITA T-BONE
- GRNITECH GRCH'PR'THE WICHITA ROCK
--- 'PR'THE WICHITA SUE
GRNITECHHOF'PR'WICHITA TREE SLOBERN STUBBY
--- GRNITECH'PR'MOJO MASON
- GRNITECH GRCH'PR'THE WICHITA SWEET PEA
--- GRNITECH GRCH'PR'AMANN'S DE ANN

Stubby is a hound that I honestly dont know much about, but of course, he has a very impressive win record. It started with his first cast win in January of 2017 at 13-months-old. Interestingly, he got two wins over two weeks there and then waited until March of 2018 to get the third Registered win to make him a NITECH.

The summer of 2018 was successful for Paul and Stubby with them getting the five cast wins they needed to finish to GRNITECH by July of 2018. Like some of the other dogs weve talked about in this column, Stubby didnt rely on a year where he had 25 or 30 wins, he was consistent in compiling a handful of wins each year. Ultimately, he got his 37th GRNITECH win in November of 2021 to finish to GRNITECHHOF.

Stubby continued to stack up wins over the next couple of years and now sits with 55 total cast wins, 47 of which came in the GRNITECH category. Like I mentioned, his consistency stood out to me with earning cast wins in seven straight years including two in 2017, seven in 2018, 12 in 2019, 10 in 2020, 15 in 2021, five in 2022, and four in 2023. Outside of a cast win in the Iowa TOC Region in 2021, all of his wins happened in the state of Kansas which doesnt have near the amount of events available as most of the states east of the Mississippi River. Congratulations to Paul and Stubby on a great run!

UKC HUNTING OPS PODCAST

Last weeks episode was a brand new Undisputed with Allen interviewing Roy Swafford. This is Part 1 of a two-part series so be on the look out for Part 2 coming soon.

COONHOUND ADVISOR

Lets Talk Stationary
One thing that I get a few questions about at each hunt I attend is the stationary rule. To be frank, its probably one that is talked about more than ever actually having any major implications on a cast but its important to know and understand the rule.

What is the stationary rule? When someone is discussing the stationary rule, they are referring to Rule 6(m) which reads that it is a handler related scratching offense, "If handler fails to declare treed a dog obviously treeing (Judges decision) for a period of five minutes. Dog may be declared treed while five is running but not after the five has expired. Judge must verify dog to be at a tree before it can be scratched. If the cast is in the process of shining a separate tree, time shall be canceled or not be applied to another dog."

How long is the stationary time? I get this question a lot and if you refer to the rule above you will get your answer. The stationary has remained five minutes even though tree time is three minutes for dogs declared treed.

When do you start the stationary? Again, this is referenced in the rule above. If a dog is obviously treeing (Judges decision), you will start the five-minute stationary clock on that dog. A previous Advisor Column added that three things need to be happening for the stationary clock to be applied. 1) the dog is obviously treeing and treeing right, 2) you dont think the dog sounds to be in a hole or place of refuge, and 3) for whatever reason the handler is not calling the dog treed. Also, pay attention to that last sentence of the rule that points out you cannot start the stationary on a dog if you are in the process of shining another dogs tree.

What breaks the stationary? There are multiple occurrences that can break the stationary time being ran on a dog. The most obvious is the handler of the dog treeing the dog the stationary is running on. The stationary is broken if it becomes obvious to the Judge that the dog has moved. The stationary is broken if the dog shuts up, triggering a two-minute clock be ran, and it expires before the dog opens again. The stationary is broken when shine time is started on another dogs tree (You must continue to the tree and start shine time at your normal pace). The stationary will be broken at the conclusion of hunt time or if a timeout is called for one of the reasons outlined in Rule 7.

What do you do with the other dogs when the stationary is running? Nothing changes for the other hounds in the cast. Continue hunting. It doesnt stop you from striking or treeing dogs, advancing to trees, shining trees, or recasting dogs.

What do you do when the stationary time runs out? At that time, you will proceed to the stationary dog. Remember, the Judge has to verify that the dog is treeing on a tree for the dog to be scratched. The main word in there is tree, not in a hole, brush pile, fence, tile, creek bank, barn, or milling around in an area. Its also important to remember that once the time has expired, the handler no longer has the opportunity to tree the hound on that tree.

What is the result? After the five-minute stationary period has elapsed AND the Judge has verified that the dog is in fact treeing, the hound will be scratched from the hunt.
