Hows it going everyone?! Its another Tuesday and that means its time for another bulletin. Im back at the desk this week, staring at a yard needing to be mowed with rain falling on it instead of the sand, saltwater, and sunshine I was looking at last week at this time, but I feel reinvigorated and ready for an awesome fall season.
As we sit here on this Tuesday morning, we are fresh off Autumn Oaks pre-entries closing last night at midnight. We dont have them all processed just yet so that information will need to wait until next weeks bulletin to be shared, but overall, it looks like we have quite a few dogs entered. Gone are the days of 600+ pre-entries as we have shifted into this world of walk-up entries. I would expect that if we can have a little better weather than last years 90+ degrees, we are going to be looking at another very successful Autumn Oaks. Lets get onto the bulletin.
PAST EVENTS
It was a busy weekend on the Major Event and Youth Championship schedules, with the West Virginia and Minnesota State Championships going down, as well as the Ohio State Youth Championship. I dont have full results for any of those events in my possession as of this morning, but when I do, the results will be posted with the rest of the Major Event Results right here: Coonhound Standings and Results
UPCOMING EVENTS
This weekends slate of events is pretty full as well. There is one state championship, one youth state championship, 13 opportunities to get a dog qualified for the World Championship, and four YEP events for the youth.
As it has been for most of the summer months, there have been loads of opportunities for kids to compete in youth only events across the country. This week in addition to the state youth championship in Minnesota, there are youth only events in Illinois, New York, North Carolina, and Virginia. Remember if you are putting on one of these events, make sure you are familiar with the rules and procedures for a youth event. We encourage each club to hold a YEP event but also, we have had to take some away because of the lack of procedural awareness and carelessness. Read your paperwork, look over the rules, and make sure you are filling out your reports correctly, so the kids get the credit they are due.
If you have been procrastinating on getting your dog qualified for the World Championship, that time is over. You now have two weekends left. Luckily both weekends are full of events. This weekend alone there are 13 opportunities to get qualified including a couple Friday qualifiers in Kentucky and Quebec. Then on Saturday there are qualifiers in Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ontario, Quebec, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
- Iowa State Championship in Highland Center, Iowa
- Minnesota State Youth Championship in Rice, Minnesota
See the Events Calendar to search for any type of event or location you are interested in.
WHATS HAPPENING?
A lot is going on in our coonhound world right now, and its fun to be a part of. The biggest thing on my plate right now is Autumn Oaks of course. A week full of warm up slams, Pro Slams, specialty shows, Nite Hunts, Bench Shows, good food vendors, awesome supply vendors, and of course fellowship is right around the corner! Stay tuned for more Autumn Oaks news in this bulletin in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you should find any information you would need on the Autumn Oaks Web Page here, Autumn Oaks
Speaking of Autumn Oaks, the Tuesday after Autumn Oaks is over, on September 2nd, the deadline to enter the 2025 Coonhound World Championship will close. For that one, there are no walk ups or deadline extensions. If you dont enter your qualified hound by the time the clock strikes midnight on that date, your run to the World Championship will be over before it starts. To view the event ad or to enter, go here: Coonhound World Championship
As I alluded to last week, we are in the thick of the Triple Crown chase. In order to win the Triple Crown, a dog must compete in all three events, the Winter Classic, Autumn Oaks, and the World Championship. To make it clear, that means you have to qualify your dog in a RQE and compete in the World Zones. Right now, 24 dogs are tied atop the leaderboard having accrued 100 points each at Winter Classic by getting double cast wins. Here are the 24 dogs that are tied for the lead now, with the best shot at bringing home the crown.

There were also around 100 single cast winners at Winter Classic who have a fighting chance, its definitely happened before.
The Autumn Oaks Pro Slams are filled out with great entrants and should make for some midweek excitement. I have been in touch with Matt Lingo of Houndsman Advantage, and the hopes are that these Pro Slam casts will have live score updates from the woods on the app, similar to what we saw at the TOC Finals. With those casts being on Wednesday and Thursday nights, he is still looking into people to walk along and input the scores into the app, but it would be a cool addition if we can find the personnel to do so. Lets see those final entry lists for the Autumn Oaks Pro Slams.

On this same news feed, the Advisor Column that is published monthly in Coonhound Bloodlines is shared. The article from the August issue was just uploaded last week and I cover a hot button topic about training collars. Be sure you keep up with the advisor columns here: Coonhound News
DOG OF THE WEEK
Last week, I didnt have time to devote to researching for the Dog of the Week. The bulletin felt flat without it. This week we are back. Again, I was scouring the Hall of Fame list for something that stood out and BOOM, there it was. Two X-Bred Coonhounds on the whole list. Reading the name of the first to achieve that title took me back to Marshalltown, Iowa. Its 2019 and Im at my first World Championship as an employee at the United Kennel Club. A fellow walks in with his Carhart overalls leading a dog I couldnt pronounce the name of. Sitting here almost six years later, that guy has judged a World Championship Final Cast for us, he has come on as a UKC Field Rep and worked some of the largest events in our registry. Not to mention he has become a darn good friend. Its funny how things work but this article shouldnt be about my bud, Brandon Scalf, it should be about a hound he sure knows and cares a lot about, ol GRNITECHHOF Tucks' XBred Pnugene. Lets find out a little more about him.
Name: GRNITECHHOF Tucks' XBred Pnugene
Breed: X-Bred Coonhound
Date of Birth: 10/28/2017
Owned by: Shane Compton and Tim Bolden of Pikeville, Kentucky
Bred by: Rick Patton
Three-Generation Pedigree:
--- GRNITECH 'PR' Tucker's Blue Boomer
- GRNITECH GRCH 'PR' Ayers Jetstream Blue Buster
--- CH GRNITECH 'PR' Moses Owl Creek Lucy
GRNITECHHOF Tucks' XBred Pnugene
--- GRNITECH GRCH 'PR' Maggard's Stylish Tuff Man
- Pattons Little Blue Diamond
--- 'PR' Brody's Kentucky Blue Princess
Pnugene didnt waste much time before busting onto the competition scene, earning his first cast win in November of 2018 having just turned 1-year-old. Less than a month later in early December, he was already a NITECH. While some dogs hit a slump around between their 1 and 2-year-old birthdays, that didnt seem to be the case here with Pnugene racking up cast wins and getting that GRNITECH title in February of 2019. In three short months, he went from nothing to GRNITECH in those Kentucky hills.
Like most, he slowed down after getting that GRNITECH title. His next cast win was at a RQE in August of 2019, qualifying for the World Zones for the first of what would end up being three different times in his career. Double cast wins at the Zones a month later punched his ticket to the 2019 World Finals where he was the X-Bred winner at the World Finals. By February of Pnugenes 3-year-old season, he earned his GRNITECHHOF title with cast wins all over. He was always successful in Batesville, having earned more than a handful of wins at the Winter Classic, wins at Autumn Oaks, and even a TOC Region win. Pnugene is one that I wont soon forget.
UKC HUNTING OPS PODCAST
Hopefully you guys enjoyed last weeks Youth Nationals Recap episode. Ive said it before and Ill say it again; the future of the sport is bright with some of the young people that are involved. We need to do all we can to help them preserve that future.
UKCS ALL-QUARTER CENTURY CAST
Wow, you guys turned up for this weeks voting. This was the second most votes weve received excluding that first round of voting for the Tournament of Champions winners. Having said that, it was tight but two dogs were neck to neck with a mere 4 percentage points separating them. At the end of the voting, GRNITECH 'PR' 7 Oaks Hardtime Lola took it home securing 34.9% just edging Playboy. This advances her to the Winter Classic Final this week.
This weeks voting will feature the five hounds that won the polls the previous five weeks, in each of the Winter Classic preliminary voting polls. The winner of this weeks poll will represent the Winter Classic and earn their spot in UKCs All-Quarter Century Cast. Who will it be? Lets once again meet the representatives.
