UKC Coonhound Weekly Bulletin, Edition 13

July 22, 2025

Welcome back to the weekly bulletin, everyone! Im half revitalized and half drained typing this today. It was a heck of a week on the road, ending up in Milton, Indiana at the UKC Youth Nationals. We had an awesome weekend watching the youth in our sport compete. You would be hard pressed to find a group of kids that are more polite, respectful, and responsible than I had the opportunity to see this weekend. I had a lot of great conversations with people, and I appreciate the kind words about the podcast and bulletin that I got this weekend, but I think my favorite conversations were Saturday night with the cast winning kids as they rolled in to turn in their scorecards. The smiles, the account of their casts, the excitement when the next scorecards were rolling in, you cant beat that. Lets dig into the bulletin, starting with more Youth Nationals talk.

PAST EVENTS

84 individual kids participated in this past weekends UKC Youth Nationals in Milton, Indiana. 50 kids participated in a nite hunt over the weekend, with 52 participating in the bench show on Saturday (which set the record for entries since the show switched to this format in 2018). Side note, 22 kids participated in at least one hunt and the show, which is great!

There were 43 boys that entered into an event, with 41 girls entering, which is a promising split for our sport. Another note, out of the 50 kids that entered into at least one of the hunts over the weekend, 17 were young ladies, which is awesome! When it was all said and done, 16 states were represented at Youth Nationals including Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

I want to give a shoutout to the host clubs, Wayne County CHA and Hannas Creek Conservation Club, along with other area clubs for all their effort making this event a success. Angie Cable, Kevin Cable, Tyler Stroh, and all the club members were super easy to deal with and made my job easy, they did great. One of the toughest parts of hosting this event is securing the judges and guides for the event. I want to give them a shout out here.

Non-Hunting Judges over the weekend: Scottie Hensley, Hannah Cable, Mark Adkins, Terry Tappy, Angie Cable, Drew Estep, Cole Pumphrey, Matt Lingo, Cody Barrows, Tyler Stroh, Deric Compton, Levi Ward, Jeff Hetrick, Brad Kelly, Zane Shauver, Blake Miller, Conor Lucas, and Kevin Cable

Guides for the weekend: Scottie Hensley, Ronnie Mitchell, Hayden Bartram, Reagan Estes, Wade Tappy, Jordyn Brooks, Jenny Carmack, John Hein Jr, Nathan Bowen Jr, Tyler Stroh, Deric Compton, Jaxon Cable, Jake McCracken, Terry Tappy, Brad Kelly, Blake Miller, Conor Lucas, and Kevin Cable

I want to thank Jamie Estep for being the Master of Hounds, and for helping in a ton of other ways over the weekend. He has now officiated more Youth Nationals than any other Master of Hounds in the history of the event. Also, we have to talk about Tiffany Adkins, who was the Bench Show Judge. She put on a great, informative seminar that the kids were very attentive and interactive with and then did a great job judging and navigating a show that is probably the toughest to judge throughout the year, awesome job! Id be remiss not to mention Angie Cable, Hannah Cable, Beulah Cable, Jessia Hetrick, Lilly Sawvel, Samantha Snider, Justin Mitchell, Tyler Stroh, and everyone else who helped with set up, moving things around, and tear down at the event. The crew that helped load up a majority of the assets in the trailer around midnight on Saturday night while we were waiting on casts was a life saver!

Last week, I talked about the partners and sponsors, but again, I want to thank Eukabuba, Bright Eyes Lights, Carolina Coon Hunters, Dans Hunting Gear, and Mud River for their donations and support of UKC's Youth Programs. You also have to give a big shout out to all those who donated to the raffle that they did. There is a list on my personal page and also on the SmugMug album I will share a link for below. Thank you all!

Lastly, thank you to the parents, grandparents, friends, mentors, and/or guardians that helped a kid make it there. Events like this arent possible without your sacrifice and efforts. I appreciate your hand in helping preserve our lifestyle with hounds.

With all that said, congratulations to the four newest Youth National Champions!

UPCOMING EVENTS

There are no major events listed on the Major Events Schedule or Youth Championship Schedule for this weekend. There is however, one event I want to spotlight. The Northeast Kingdom Coon and Cat Club in Lyndonville, Vermont will be hosting their 61st Coon Hunters Reunion this week, from July 24-27. Looking at the history of this event, its not uncommon for them to have 40+ dogs in the shows, and mid-teens to twenties in the nite hunt, field trial, and water races. They even have some squirrel events.

Check them out here: 61st Coon Hunters Reunion in Lyndonville, Vermont
If any squirrel hunters are looking, here is that info: Squirrel Hunts

There are also four Regional Qualifying Events in four different states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Only a month left to go to get qualified for the World Championship.

One note I want to add on Autumn Oaks entries, we want to do something special for the Grand Champion Hall of Fame show on Thursday at Autumn Oaks. To do so, we need you to pre-enter your GRCHHOF hounds. You have until August 11th, I hope you take advantage of that!

DOG OF THE WEEK

I was picking my brain on what hound to feature in this weeks bulletin as the dog of the week. In case this is your first time, in the past six weeks, I have featured the following six hounds.
- Edition 7: GRCHHOF GRNITECHHOF PR Hardys Fabous River Katie HTX2
- Edition 8: CGRCH GRWCH(4) GRNITECH(3) GRFCHHOF GRCHHOF PR Hogans Ruby HTX4
- Edition 9: WLDNITECH GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Snookis Cookie
- Edition 10: NGRNCH WLDNITECH GRNITECH 'PR' House's Mr Clean
- Edition 11: WLDNITECH NGRNCH GRNITECH 'PR' Hannas Creek Feelin' Frisky
- Edition 12: GRCHHOF GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Caldwells Southern Belle HTX3

When I am looking for the Dog of the Week, I try to look for outliers. Dogs that have done something, that few others have accomplished. With Autumn Oaks bearing down on us, I was wondering how many dogs had won enough casts to achieve the GRNITECHHOF title, and also was awarded the National Grand Nite Champion of Autumn Oaks. After a quick search I found there had only been one, NGRNCH GRCH GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Redneck Backwoods Shack. The winner of my first Autumn Oaks as a UKC employee, lets find out more about him.

Name: NGRNCH GRCH GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Redneck Backwoods Shack
Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound
Date of Birth: 2/18/2013
Owned by: Cheyenne Cummings of Seneca, Missouri
Bred by: David Griner
Three-Generation Pedigree:
--- GRNITECH 'PR' Chase's Electric Shock
- GRNITECH 'PR' Redneck Mafia
--- CH GRNITECH 'PR' Chase's Peppermint Dixie
NGRNCH GRCH GRNITECHHOF 'PR' Redneck Backwoods Shack
--- GRCH GRNITECH 'PR' Big Creek Rat Tat
- GRCH GRNITECH 'PR' Rat's Hi Country Ann
--- GRNITECH 'PR' Liquid Gold Lace

Shack passed his first hurdle and became a NITECH in July of 2014 at 17 months old. Shortly after, in January of 2015, he made the next leap and made GRNITECH. His grind for GRNITECHHOF didnt start right away, as the title didnt even exist until 4 or 5 years later. At mostly major events, he did end up finishing to GRNITECHHOF as a 10-year-old National Grand Nite Champion. So, what did he do in between? A lot.

His resume is as impressive as you will see. He has qualified for the World Championship Zones eight different times over his life, including 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. He made some serious runs at the World Championship finishing 15th in 2016 in Greencastle, Indiana, 3rd Place in 2017 in Elberton, Georgia, and 14th Place in 2019 in Marshalltown, Iowa, showing he can win in any coon population and terrain.

Another of his impressive feats that I wanted to point out, speaks to his longevity. He has accrued cast wins at six different Oklahoma State Championships in his career, including 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. As he sits now, he has 48 cast wins on his record with 39 of them being in the GRNITECH category. I havent asked Cheyenne this, but I would imagine if he had to pick one win that stood out in Shacks UKC competition career, winning the 2019 Autumn Oaks National Grand Nite Champion has to be at the top. Shack is a dog that will be remembered for a long time.

UKC HUNTING OPS PODCAST
