2) Can DNA testing prove my dog is purebred?

No, DNA can determine or verify the parentage of a dog, but it cannot provide proof that a dog is purebred.

3) Why did my dog’s DNA test fail?

Even with the best intentions; trying to make sure the sample is clean, enough tissue has been collected, and etc. a sample can fail. If this happens, read the collection instructions again to ensure you did not miss a step or contaminate the sample. Carefully, complete the collection process again and resubmit the swab in the provided return envelope.

4) How long does it take to get my dog’s DNA results?

The complete process takes about six to eight weeks.

5) How often are samples sent to the lab?

Samples are sent out weekly.

6) Can I DNA test a deceased dog?

You may test a deceased dog, if the dog is at the Veterinarian’s office at the time of passing, please have the Veterinarian complete the following steps for blood draws:

Process to submit Blood sample for DNA testing:
  • If possible, the blood needs to be drawn by a vet at the beginning of the week.
  • Biologicals, such as blood or serum need to be shipped in a purple vacutainer packed on blue ice and over-night directly to Scidera, Inc.
  • The dog's Name and UKC number needs to be referenced inside the package.
  • Type of biological (Blood, Semen, Serum) needs to be listed on the outside of the package.
  • Overnight package to:

    Scidera, Inc Address
    Attn: Leslie Bickel
    1756 Picasso Avenue
    Davis CA 95616
    phone: 800-311-8808

Please note, there are additional fees for this method of DNA testing, please contact the UKC DNA department for the fee schedule.

7) Can I DNA test frozen semen?

Process to submit Semen/Frozen Semen for DNA testing:
  • At the time of Artificial Insemination a small bit of the semen needs to be saved in the straw. (AI should be done at beginning of week, if possible).
  • The straw needs to be placed in a resealable bag, labeled SEMEN, no paper envelopes (envelope is too absorbent).
  • Pack the resealable bag on blue ice and over-night directly to Scidera, Inc.
  • The dog's Name and UKC number needs to be referenced inside the package.
  • Semen needs to be listed on the outside of the package.
  • Overnight package to:

    Scidera, Inc. Address
    Attn: Leslie Bickel
    1756 Picasso Avenue
    Davis CA 95616

Please note, there are additional fees for this method of DNA testing, please contact the UKC DNA department for the fee schedule.

8) Why DNA test?

DNA testing is a permanent form of identification, while tattoos may fade and microchips may fail, DNA is permanent.

9) How old does a puppy have to be before it can be DNA tested?

A puppy can be tested at any age, as long as the puppy can be separated from the mother for about 30 minutes before testing.

10) Is DNA a life time identification or will I need to re-test my dog when it is older?

Your dog’s DNA is its own unique identification, this identification will never change.

11) Does UKC accept DNA results from any other DNA facilities?

No. UKC works exclusively with Scidera, Inc

Treeing Walker Coonhound

One of UKC's most widely registered breeds, the Treeing Walker was developed from certain strains of English Walker Foxhounds. Walkers were first registered with UKC as part of the English Coonhound breed. Then in 1945, at the request of Walker breeders, UKC began registering them as a separate breed — first as Walkers (Treeing) and then later as Treeing Walkers.
