Frequently Asked Questions About UKC Publications

What are the deadlines?
COONHOUND BLOODLINES deadlines are always the first of the month prior. (i.e. the deadline for the June issue is May 1). BLOODLINES deadlines are always the 15th, two months prior to the planned issue. (i.e. the deadline for the June issue is April 15). The HUNTING RETRIEVER deadline is always the 15th of the month prior to the planned bi-monthly issue. (i.e. the deadline for the June/July issue is May 15). If a deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the true deadline will be the Monday immediately following.

Does it cost extra to have my ad designed?
It does not cost extra to have your ad designed, and is actually part of the price. Specific layouts may be requested, and mock-ups of how you would like your ad may be sent with all components of the ad material. Past ads may also be referred to when requesting a specific layout.

I've never advertised before. How do I even submit an ad?
Send a write up of what you’d like your ad to say, any photos you’d like in the ad, and specific layout guidelines if you have any in mind. Your ad may be submitted via regular mail, over the phone if no pictures will be sent, or through email. If emailing an ad, certain specifications must be followed (Please contact the advertising department for these specifications.)

Do I need to send a copy of or write out my dog's pedigree if I want it in the ad?
For COONHOUND BLOODLINES and BLOODLINES magazines, advertisers need only submit the dog’s registration number in order for us to pull the dog’s pedigree from our system. It is not necessary to write the entire pedigree out. For HUNTING RETRIEVER magazine a copy of the dog’s pedigree is required. We can add other registry titles to any UKC pedigree as long as you provide them.

Will my photos be returned?
To have photos returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Typical return time is 30-60 days.

Can I be placed on a certain page?
Certain pages are available for a special placement rate. Prime pages, which are pages 3 – 15 must be reserved ahead of time. You may call the office or email to determine what pages are available. We also make every effort to place ads next to certain people upon request (at no extra charge), but can’t always guarantee it.

What type of photos work best in an ad?
Actual 35 mm photos reproduce best. Digital photos may also be used, but must be submitted via email or on disk. Digital photos that have been printed out will not reproduce properly or with the quality an advertiser would expect for their ad. Digital photos must be submitted at no less than 300 dpi, and either in jpeg or tif formats.

Can you change the size/color of my photos?
We can adjust the size and color of photos submitted. Black and white photos are not necessary for black and white ads, color photos can be saved as black and white, and also sized to fit the ad.

Do I have to pay up front for my ad or can you bill me?
You may submit payment either in the form of a credit card number, check or money order when submitting the ad. You may also be billed for the ad. Invoices are mailed the first of the month concurrent with the magazine. (i.e. Invoices for all ads run in April CB, go in the mail on April 1) and must be paid before the 1st of the following month or late charges will be applied. HUNTING RETRIEVER advertisers will be charged double if not currently members of HRC. HRC and BLOODLINES advertisers ad rates also differ depending on whether the ad is billed or prepaid.

Can I see a proof of my ad before it goes to print?
E-mail or fax ad proofs are available prior to print. When a proof is sent, the advertiser is given 24 hours to reply with changes. Any changes received after that window of time cannot be accepted, unless prior arrangements are made.

How does the Black Gold discount work?
It is up to the advertiser to contact Black Gold in reference to receiving a discount. The Black Gold logo must be requested when submitting the ad, and the advertiser must be on that month’s list of Black Gold discounts.

How soon should I mail my ad for the next issue?
If ads are being submitted regular mail at least two weeks prior to deadline, they will usually reach us in time. After that, it is strongly suggested to send the ad either priority mail or overnight to ensure it reaches us on deadline day, by 4:30 p.m. E.S.T.

How do I submit an article?
Articles may be submitted via e-mail, fax, or regular mail. They will be reviewed by the editor and the writer will be contacted with any questions. Further article questions can be directed to the editor, or the editorial assistant.

How do I submit a cover photo?
Cover photos can be emailed to the editor, as long as they are at least 300 dpi. Potential cover photos can also be mailed to the regular address, attention to the magazine department. Whether emailed or mailed, there must be identification of the photo’s subject. If it is a photo taken by a professional photographer and had to be purchased, written permission must accompany the photo, allowing use either in an ad or on the cover.

American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull Terrier is UKC's second most widely registered breed. Originally developed during the nineteenth century to be a combination of the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the Bulldog, the APBT embodies all of the virtues attributed to great warriors: strength, indomitable courage, and gentleness with loved ones. The first APBT ever registered belonged to UKC founder, C. Z. Bennett, who assigned UKC registration number 1 to his own APBT, Bennett's Ring in 1898.
