Building a Good Reputation
Nathan Lattimer - From September 2008 Youth Special Issue
In today's world, just by reading the news and by hearing what is going on in the world, it has never been more obvious that we need better role models for our children. While I believe that your blue collar, hard working folks who make up a the majority of our sport do a better job than most, it still stands to reason that even we could do a better job. Yes, I said we. I'm raising a daughter, with a son due in December, and I want to make sure that what they see Dad do is what Dad should be doing. I just wanted to cover a few topics that, as coon hunters, our youth will face, and give them some advice on how to handle each one and give us adults a friendly reminder.
Conserving Our Resource
Without a doubt, the raccoon is the most important part of our sport. Obviously, without him, the need for a coonhound would not exist…
Diminishing Hunting Territory
As our great country becomes more populated, hunting territory is becoming harder and harder to find. A lot of times land owners and farmers would love to have some coon harvested off of their property, but due to the conduct of someone who misused the property and did not follow rules, the owners choose to deal with the coon problem rather than deal with a coon hunter problem. I have found that if you ask permission in a respectful manner, with a promise to obey any rules given, you will often have a good chance of getting their permission…
Sportsmanship
As hunters, we all love to get together and tell stories and pleasure hunt, and all of that is great. Sad to say, not everyone gets along and not everyone handles each situation in a professional manner. I would venture to say though that if given five minutes to think about it, a lot of these individuals would handle the situation differently themselves. Let's face it, we're all different and we all like different things in a hound… But there is a right way to express yourself and to bring it across as your preference and not as the gospel…
Honesty
The single most important item of our sport, or any sport, is without a doubt, honesty. Whether it be out on a cast or while trying to sell a dog, honesty is always the best policy…
The Nite Hunts
Next I'd like to touch on the nite hunts. A guy could write a five-page article on this subject every month for a year and not even scratch the surface, so I'm going to try and keep it pretty general. The nite hunts were designed for one reason - to recognize the best dog - period. Somewhere along the line a group of guys got together and put together a set of rules that would help decide who had the best coon dog on that given night. As far as I know, that is still the objective; however, we have guys who feel the objective is for them to win every nite hunt, at any cost...
