Exercising With Your Dog
by Judy Threlfall

Ah…the benefits of exercise. What is more enjoyable than breaking a sweat in spandex that has lost it span? Or how about Sweatin’ to the OldiesŪ in Lycra that isn’t “lying” about your expanding waistline? Why exercise in the presence of perfectly fit strangers when you can exercise with your very best friend?
Exercise is good for both you and your dog, so why not work out together? Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy your dog a matching exercise outfit to work out at the gym together. Leave the gym to Barbie and Ken look-alikes. Let’s visit some favorite ways to exercise yourself and your dog.
Walk the Dog!
As soon as you get home from work, or before you go if you are an early riser, slip on some sneakers, grab the leash and get in gear. Remember, to take a clean-up bag just in case Fido needs a potty break before you guys get back home.
Hiking
If you live in an area with great hiking trails, this could be you and your pet’s home away from home. Just make sure you pack some water for you and your pet. Always exercise (pardon the pun) common sense when it comes to heat, amount of exercise, etc.
Yard Games
If you have a great backyard with a fence, you can throw the ball or toss a Frisbee for your dog. Some dogs even enjoy a lively game of chase. Many breeds, such as Labrador Retrievers, love swimming with their owners in the family pool.
Exercise Safety
If you run, walk or play with your dog, make sure you are both prepared. If you or your dog needs to lose weight, take things slower and gradually work yourself up to a full workout.
Well, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get some exercise!

The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the oldest French breeds. Its actual origins are obscure but it is probably descended from one of the strains of Mastiff-type dogs that accompanied Macedonian and Roman armies through Asia, Europe, and Britain. By the middle of the 19th century, the Dogue de Bordeaux was little known outside of Aquitaine where it was used to hunt large animals, such as boar; to fight; to guard homes and cattle; and in the service of butchers. The breed narrowly missed extinction during the two world wars but enjoyed a resurgence in the 1960's. Sometime in the early 1980's, the first Dogue de Bordeaux was imported to the United States. |
