Finding The Right Dog For You

UKC registers over 300 breeds of dogs and they come in a seemingly endless array of shapes and sizes. With variety like that, there is virtually a dog breed to suit everyone’s lifestyle. A dog is a commitment and it’s important to find a dog that will be happy accompanying you in your daily activities. All that’s needed to find the right dog for you is a little homework.

First of all, identify your lifestyle. Are you the rugged, active type who loves the great outdoors? Or are you someone who likes to curl up with a good book every chance you get? It’s important to get an honest assessment of who you are in order to find a breed that will be willing and able to join you in the things you enjoy doing. For instance, if you enjoy jogging, look for a dog that can enjoy it with you, one that is large enough so it doesn’t have to struggle to keep up. If you’re more of a couch potato, look for a dog that doesn’t need as much exercise to keep you company while you channel-surf.

Size matters. An apartment dweller probably would soon realize that the Newfoundland that made such an adorable puppy fills up most of the living room and sends the Christmas tree ornaments flying with a swish of his tail. He’d be better suited for a larger home and a nice fenced yard.

Grooming is something all dogs need, but some need it more than others. That Old English Sheepdog looks really cool with all that hair when you see him at the local dog show, but did you see the hours of bathing and brushing that went into getting him to look the way he does? If you want to attempt it yourself, be forewarned; it’s a labor of love. Most people end up having a dog professionally groomed, and the costs involved can be considerable. Short-coated dogs require less grooming, but still need some basics.

So, with these things in mind, go to a local show, talk to breeders or do some reading to become an informed shopper. A good place to start is the UKC website, with our breed standards. Breeds are organized into groups and each group heading talks about what the dogs were bred to do. This information can be invaluable in starting your search. Of course, UKC is always here to help you in any way we can.

Good luck!

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever was developed in late 19th century Scotland and England primarily by crossing Flat- and Wavy-coated Retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniels, and a red Setter. The Golden was bred by British aristocrats to be a dual purpose dog, able to retrieve waterfowl and upland game birds and also to be a companion. The Golden Retriever's friendly disposition, attractive appearance, and high level of trainability have made this breed one of the most popular in the United States. The Golden Retriever was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1956.
