Finding The Right Dog For You
First of all, identify your lifestyle. Are you the rugged, active type who loves the great outdoors? Or are you someone who likes to curl up with a good book every chance you get? It’s important to get an honest assessment of who you are in order to find a breed that will be willing and able to join you in the things you enjoy doing. For instance, if you enjoy jogging, look for a dog that can enjoy it with you, one that is large enough so it doesn’t have to struggle to keep up. If you’re more of a couch potato, look for a dog that doesn’t need as much exercise to keep you company while you channel-surf. Size matters. An apartment dweller probably would soon realize that the Newfoundland that made such an adorable puppy fills up most of the living room and sends the Christmas tree ornaments flying with a swish of his tail. He’d be better suited for a larger home and a nice fenced yard. Grooming is something all dogs need, but some need it more than others. That Old English Sheepdog looks really cool with all that hair when you see him at the local dog show, but did you see the hours of bathing and brushing that went into getting him to look the way he does? If you want to attempt it yourself, be forewarned; it’s a labor of love. Most people end up having a dog professionally groomed, and the costs involved can be considerable. Short-coated dogs require less grooming, but still need some basics.
Good luck! |
