Dog Sport

For centuries, dogs have acted as companions and as guardians over home, family and livestock. These natural tendencies are channeled and focused in our Dog Sport events. Starting with the most basic Family Obedience program and advancing through more difficult levels of training, dogs are evaluated as companions and as protectors of home and hearth.

Finally, America has its first working dog organization offering training titles related to service work that has the recognition and services of a national registry. Service Dogs of America serves as the United Kennel Club's affiliate organization for promoting and providing events for all the new training titles. UKC & SDA will offer training titles that have been especially designed to meet the needs, interests and lifestyles of American dog owners. All titles have practical applications and much thought has been given toward making all titles as enjoyable as possible to train and entertaining to watch.

Rat Terrier

The Rat Terrier is an American breed descended from the terriers brought over by English miners and other working class immigrants. These dogs were used as ratters, and gambling on their prowess in killing rats was a favorite hobby of their owners. Eventually, these tough little terriers evolved into today’s Rat Terrier. The breed was popularized by President Teddy Roosevelt, who frequently hunted with his Rat Terriers. The Rat Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1999.
