Every Dog Has Its Day
I just wanted to email some pictures of my male Treeing Feist Atom. Here's a photo of him treeing a few gray squirrels down here in Southwest Georgia. Thanks!

UKC World Squirrel Dog Championship

February 22-23, ‘08
Edgefield, SC

The first UKC World Squirrel Dog Championship accomplished exactly what we hoped it would. We named two deserving World Champions and received lots of feedback about the UKC squirrel dog program. UKC would like to thank all those that participated in the event. The list of qualified dogs in attendance was certainly not lacking in quality. We would like to thank the Red Hill Houndsman Association and particularly Wayne and Joy Agner for all the planning and preparation in hosting the event. We would like to thank our sponsors for this event; Black Gold Dog Food, Tri-Tronics and Owen’s Manufacturing Diamond Deluxe Dog Boxes. We would also like to thank Eugene Hill, UKC’s Cur / Feist Manager for his expertise not only in conducting this event but in guiding this program throughout the year. Event results are as follows:

Curs were developed by early settlers in the southern and western United States as all-purpose dogs. Curs are excellent tree dogs, used to hunt squirrel, coon, mountain lion, and bear. They are used in Louisiana and Texas to hunt wild hogs. They also serve as outstanding stock dogs.

The Feist breeds are descended from the terriers brought over by English miners and other working class immigrants. These terriers probably included crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the now extinct white English Terrier. Some of these dogs were crossed with Whippets or Italian Greyhounds (for speed) and Beagles (for hunting ability). Eventually, these tough little terriers evolved into today's squirrel hunting Feists.

About the UKC Cur-Feist Program

Performance Events tailored for the Cur and Feist breeds are based upon treeing game. The Cur / Feist Program actually offers three different performance events for evaluating these hard working tree dogs. The most popular of the events offered is the licensed Squirrel Hunt. At a typical licensed squirrel hunt, three dogs are randomly drawn into a group (called a cast) to hunt against each other....
