Jessica Maurer, Chinooks

Biography

(Breeder Spotlight)

I have been a Chinook owner, breeder, exhibitor and musher for more than 14 years. I, along with my partner, Penthea Burns, own GreatMountain Chinooks, a breed/show kennel in Lewiston, Maine. We produced our first litter in 1999 and have produced eleven litters.

Our focus is on breeding healthy dogs who are able of doing the job they were intended to do – pull sleds. We carefully research the health behind every dog we breed and breed to decrease genetic health problems in our breed, including temperament issues. We seek independent evaluation on our dogs and on their offspring. We choose mates to improve the conformation and sledding drive of the next generation. We have been rewarded with healthy, well-conformed offspring who have done well in the show ring and in harness.

We pride ourselves on taking special care in socializing puppies and on placing puppies with the right families. We actively support our new owners, regardless of whether they have a pet or a breeding dog from our kennel. We maintain lifetime contact with all owners and mentor all new breeders through their first several breeding experiences. We actively seek homes that will work our dogs in harness and who will breed a litter or two.

We have been using our Chinooks for recreational dog sledding for more than a decade. Currently, the GreatMountain team consists almost entirely of home-bred dogs. In fact, three of the dogs on our current team are grandmother, mother and grand daughter from our line. There is no greater joy than watching your hard work in planning and executing a breeding pay off with dogs who love to work in harness!

While we have produced many UKC registered purebred litters, the centerpiece of our breeding program has been our crossbred line. This line started from a 1st generation Chinook named Northdown X Cheena. We have bred this line pursuant to the strict requirements of the Chinook Owners Association (COA) CrossBreeding Program, a program that is authorized and celebrated by the United Kennel Club (UKC).

Ten years of dedicated work on this line paid off when a 4th generation dog from our line became a new purebred and three days later won the 2009 Chinook National Specialty – as a class dog her first time in the ring! This dog, NBOB GreatMountain Redington Guide DNA-VIP CGC, has been working on our team since she was six months old. She epitomizes the goals of our breeding program – she is healthy, well-conformed and DOING the work she was intended to do. We couldn’t ask for more than this!

I served for more than a decade on the Board of Directors of the COA and I am a founder of the affiliate club, Chinooks New England(CNE)! Within the COA, I served as vice president, president, immediate past president, bench chair, health chair, and rescue chair. Penthea and I have encouraged our owners to take an active role in the COA, CNE and the UKC and are encouraged that some many have been willing to do so.

While we celebrate the many accomplishments we’ve had in the breed, we are quick to remember all of the support and kindness other Chinook breeders, exhibitors and owners have shown us along our journey. We are indebted to WoodsRunner Chinooks, Hurricane Chinooks and Rain Mountain Chinooks for sharing the bloodlines, knowledge and time with us. Our breed will be forever indebted to the UKC for its leadership and vision in accepting the COA’s CrossBreeding Program. We would not have known any of the successes we have had without the UKC’s support of our breed and this unique program.

Redbone Coonhound

The Redbone was the second coonhound breed to be registered with UKC, the first being registered in 1902, two years after the American Black & Tan. The Redbone is known to be a well-balanced breed, making them adaptable to various types of hunting and terrain. Their agility benefits them when hunting in fenced country or steep, rocky ground. Redbones are known to make excellent water dogs.
