Barbara Marin, American Pit Bull Terrier

Biography (Breeder Spotlight)

I have worked very hard to be where I am. I have been happily married for 33 years this year. I have two beautiful kids, one 32 year old daughter (Micaela) who is a PA, working in pediatrics, and our first granddaughter of 10 months of age. I spend a lot of time with her and a wonderful Son-in-law who you couldn’t ask for better. Our son Cody is now 15 years old and is in high school and wants to become a Doctor. What more could one person ask for a happy life and wonderful family, good friends, who you always meet on the way.

Where do I start? I grew up in Hacienda Heights, California. We always had dogs in our lives and also Cats. When my grandfather would come down from Washington, he always brought his working dogs. He had 2000 sheep in Washington to guard with some of the best sheep dogs. My Grandfather worked his dogs by sign language. With his dogs, that’s what got me to start learning more about all kinds of dogs and what you can do with them.
Growing up we had horses, dogs, cats and chickens. We had to learn very fast on how to take care of them, I always wanted to be a vet but ended up being a NA in the Medical field. When I lived in Mexico for a year, I would go with my father-in-law to take care of other people’s animals from helping with birth, to snake bites on horses, whelping pigs and cutting teeth as they are born. You could say my father-in-law was like the town’s vet on hand.

When I got married, I wanted a breed of working dogs. We started off with English Sheppard’s and came to find out the hard way that they don’t like to stay home, they like to run and work. Our place wasn’t big enough for what they needed, so we ended up losing them as we could not keep them home for very long. In 1975, we got our first American Pit Bull & English Bull Dog mix. At the time, we were just learning about the breed, our pup was stolen from our yard, some one took him and when they found out he would not fight, he was left for dead on the side of the main road. We looked everywhere for him, at pounds and markets, we made signs and when we finally found out what happen to him, he was put to sleep. The dog pound that had picked him up, felt he was a pure bred and took him to the vet, when no one claimed him after 10 days they put him down. That was the same day I found out what had happened to him and the officer said SORRY! Well that’s what put me in high gear to work for this breed and here I am today 33 years later and still learning.

I have worked with some of the best kids in 4-H. We’ve won a lot of dog shows through San Bernardino, California.

English Coonhound

A person could almost say that the history of the English Coonhound is the history of all coonhounds — and he wouldn’t be too far wrong. With the exception of the Plott Hound, all the UKC breeds of coonhounds have a common ancestry that is deeply rooted in the English Foxhound. The English was first registered by UKC in 1905, under the name of English Fox & Coonhound. English hounds have excelled in both performance and conformation. The first major coonhound Field Trial of all time, the first Leafy Oak, was won by an English dog called “Bones”, owned by Colonel Leon Robinson.
