Breeder Spotlight

How long have you been involved in your breed?
Since 1976

List three words that you feel best describe your breed.

Loyalty, Universal Love

In your opinion what physical characteristic defines your breed the most?

Endurance & Balance

In your opinion which behavioral characteristic defines your breed the most?

They are very loyal.

What is the largest false impression your breed gives ?

That the breed wants to fight.

What should breeders be most concerned about today?

Over size dogs ( bully breeds) that can not walk and or breathe. This is what some people are breeding for, this macho dog. They are breeding an over sized dog. We really need to stop poorly bred dogs.

Is your breed standard sufficient? If you do not feel it is sufficient, briefly list changes you would like to see made.

I would want the standards as it was once. Not as it is today they keep adding and taking stuff off. Come on, we all know what the breed was bred to do, we are here to make things better, not to your own way. One day you might like a longer body and tomorrow you might worry about the muzzle on your dog. So, you change the standard to look like the current dogs as you need to. That is not right, we should go by the standard as it was year ago, where it was so hard to make a champion. Now days any one can be a champion. Just look around you. You will see all these puppies becoming champion and by the time they are a year old they fall apart. This is what I would like change.

What counsel would you like to give a new comer?

You need to respect the breed to get respect, if you do not respect the breed as it is then this breed is not for you. Don’t look at the money you might acquire for having litters, because litters cost money. Also, all of your dogs need 100% percent of your time. If you want to show your dog or puppies, go out there knowing you are going to have fun. Enjoy yourself and don’t get involved with the things that what turn people away. Just listen and learn.

What is the single most charming attribute of your breed ?

They are wonderful companions.

Do you prefer your breed judged moving or standing ?

Standing.

What is the most common judging mistake in your breed?

Some judges do not know the breed in my eyes. (Inexperienced) They don’t take the time to learn, they move right though and look at the handler. I have seen it myself.

Who would you like to see judge your National specialty?
I like to see breeder judges do our specialty
Barbara Marin, Sam Royall, Jean Murray, June Pasko & Walt Pasko, Carol Gaines

Toy Fox Terrier

The immediate ancestor of the Toy Fox Terrier is the larger Smooth Fox Terrier. Owners of these brave little dogs found that the smallest, which they called "runts", were the scrappiest of the bunch. These little dogs were prized for their temperament. Smaller dogs were developed and eventually were found in the seven-pound range. The United Kennel Club began registering the Smooth Fox Terrier in 1912. Between then and the mid-1920's, the Toy Fox Terrier was developed, being a miniature of the previous breed, however they were still registered under the name of Fox Terrier (Smooth). Those dogs appear almost identical to the dogs of today. It was not until February 24, 1936, that U.K.C. began registering the Toy Fox Terrier under its current name.
