Dan Crutchfield, American Pit Bull Terriers

Biography (Breeder Spotlight)

Dan Crutchfield resides in Jayess, Mississippi with his wife, Ellen. He is a all-breed judge for the United Kennel Club.

I was born in Madisonville, Louisiana in 1943. It has been a long life-journey to get to today and all through that time I have enjoyed the companionship of dogs. My father was an avid squirrel hunter and had some of the best squirrel dogs in Southeast Louisiana in his time, some remarkable because of their breeds; English Shepherd and German Shepard Dog.

In the late 1950's I began to work summers on my brother-in-laws dairy farm. He used Border Collies in the field and owned American Pit Bull Terriers and Louisiana Catahoula Dogs which were used for baying and catching feral hogs. There were no stock laws and you must fence your property to keep livestock out. I was given an APBT and a LCLD for my own and this began a love of the APBT that still goes on.

Upon graduation from high school in 1961 I attended Louisiana State University graduated from in 1965 and went on to earn a doctorate in the Animal Sciences. During my college years I was married and became father of a son and daughter. I then moved to Baton Rouge, LA where I worked for Ethyl Corporation in vinyl chloride production as a systems operator for five years. After a divorce and becoming concerned about my exposure to chemicals on this job, I resigned and moved back to Covington, LA where I worked as Chief of Party, with an engineering firm, doing land surveying until 1979, when I bought the farm in Jayess, MS where I now reside with my wife Ellen.

In 1998, I enter my APBT, Bon TempsTabasco Boy, in an UKC conformation show in Denton, TX. He earned 95 championship points and a major. I was hooked! Ellen was breeding Himalayan cats at the time and traded one of her cats for a very nice Yorkshire Terrier. So we started exhibiting Yorkies. Then along come the Japanese Chins. Our Chin, Lincoln, went on to become the first Grand Champion in the breed.

I applied to become an UKC conformation judge in 2000 and have enjoyed judging shows all over the United States. I have had the honor of judging the NAPBTA Specialty at Premier in 2006 and for the JTAZ club in Kyoto, Japan; and the NAPBTA annual national show in 2007. I helped organize the Mississippi State American Pit Bull Terrier Club in 2002, and have served as president since it's inception.

American Eskimo

Recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1913, the American Eskimo is a member of the ancient and wide ranging Spitz family of dogs. White Spitzes were popular in Pomerania and in the coastal regions of Germany. Sailors traded the white dogs throughout Europe. When Queen Charlotte of England acquired several white Spitzes, the dogs became fashionable among British aristocrats. White Spitzes appear in several Gainsborough paintings. Known as the German Spitz in its homeland, the breed was renamed the American Eskimo in 1917.
