UKC Announces 2007 Top Breeds
For more information, contact Tanya Raab at traab@ukcdogs.com Kalamazoo, Michigan, January 18, 2008 – In carrying on a long-standing tradition, the United Kennel Club is pleased to announce the top ten registered purebred dog breeds for 2007. This list, based on UKC registration figures, identifies recent trends in purebred dog ownership and foreshadows what can be expected for purebred dog registration in the upcoming year. Each Breed represented in the Top Ten reflects the Total Dog philosophy that is the backbone of United Kennel Club.

The Top Ten breeds include:
1. Treeing Walker Coonhound (Scenthound Group)
2. American Pit Bull Terrier (Terrier Group)
3. Bluetick Coonhound (Scenthound Group)
4. English Coonhound (Scenthound Group)
5. American Black & Tan Coonhound (Scenthound Group)
6. Redbone Coonhound (Scenthound Group)
7. Beagle (Scenthound Group)
8. Labrador Retriever (Gun Dog Group)
9. Plott Hound (Scenthound Group)
10. American Eskimo (Northern Group)
The UKC Top Ten Breeds boasts seven Scenthound Breeds, including Treeing Walker and Bluetick Coonhounds placing in positions one and three respectively. When asked about the popularity of Coonhounds, Todd Kellam, UKC Vice President of Hunting Programs, explains; “Our Coonhound breeds have always been great examples of the goals we have set here at UKC. Dogs that beautifully represent the established breed standard in the (bench show) ring and have the skills to perform in the real world.”
Also, the rise in popularity of other breeds such as American Pit Bull Terrier and Beagle (having held these positions for the second year) clearly show the general public’s desire to own beautiful dogs that are not only wonderful family pets but also can perform competitively in skill events.
It is important to note that while this list reflects the top breeds in the UKC Registry, it is not intended to represent the “Most Popular Dogs in America”. This Weekend At UKC
The 49th Autumn Oaks event takes place this weekend, Thursday, August 28 to Sunday, August 30! Coonhounds from near and far will gather in Richmond, Indiana to compete in one of the year's largest hunts and shows. The Autumn Oaks nite hunt is the second leg in the prestigious UKC Triple Crown presented by Black Gold. This year marks the grand debut of the two-ring, two-day bench show - the largest coonhund bench show in the world! With camping, great food, and live entertainment on Friday and Saturday, this is truly "The Event Where History Is Made".
