Metropolitan Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trials

Kalamazoo, Michigan, January 23, 2006 – Over 5,000 spectators filled the new Rock Financial Showplace, in Novi, Michigan to enjoy the wide variety of dogs on display during the United Kennel Club All-Breed Conformation Dog Show and Agility Trials hosted by the Metropolitan Kennel Club of greater Detroit. In addition, this was the first ever benched dog show for UKC.

As the trademark of any UKC event, the Metropolitan Kennel Club dog show provided both the novice and experienced dog-show spectator the opportunity to get close to the action, interact with participants, and enjoy the beauty and grace of purebred dogs in action.

The three-day event was scheduled to produce two Best In Show winners per day. However, the Best In Show winning was dominated by the Belgian Shepherd Dog Champion CH Blackwater’s Secret At Chargany, owned by Janice Powers & Linda Fung and the Dachshund Grand Champion, GR CH Gemdach Red Alert L, owned by Justin and Patrick Williamson. Each dog received the judge’s nod as a Best In Show winner on Friday and again on Sunday.

From Obedience Trial 1, Trial 2 Friday; Obedience Trial 1 & 2 on Saturday the High In Trial winner was CH Lonetree's Neon Storm, NS Duck Tolling Retriever, owned by Corrine Williams and Nelson Williams Jr. High in Trial on Sunday, Trial 1, UAGI Hunters The Wedding Singer, Portuguese Water Dog, owned by Kim O'Neill & Kevin O'Neill; Trial 2, High in Trial winner was Laser Light Show, Flat-Coated Retriever, Novice A 192, owned by Austin Helenski & Camie Heleski. Light Show was also handled by the Highest Scoring Junior Handler in Trial Tatia Heleski.

The UKC strives to provide events that are competitive and fun for the competitors but also enjoyable and educational for the spectators. With high energy special events, including Rescue Dog demonstrations, Fly Ball relay race demonstrations and Dog Dancing exhibitions, the Metropolitan Kennel Club show proved once again at UKC, “Our Dogs Do Stuff”®.

The new Rock Financial Showplace, in Novi, Michigan proved to be the ideal setting to show case this inaugural event, hosted by the Metropolitan Kennel Club and licensed by United Kennel Club. The success of the event and the strong spectator turn-out suggests that the partnership between the Metropolitan Kennel Club and United Kennel Club should have a bright and successful future.

Bluetick Coonhound

UKC's third most widely registered breed is the Bluetick Coonhound. It is most likely that the Bluetick is principally descended from the quick foxhounds of England with some introduction of the blood of various French hounds which were used for hunting big game. The French dogs were known as being very cold nosed. George Washington received five such French hounds from General Lafayette. Blueticks were originally registered with UKC as English. In 1946, at the request of the Bluetick fanciers, UKC began registering Blueticks as a separate breed.
