Be Responsible, Do Your Research!
UKC acknowledges that responsible dog breeders are our fundamental asset, the backbone of our registry, and the guardians of the quality and health of dogs throughout the world. In support of these breeders, United Kennel Club many years ago established a Breeders Code of Ethics and Kennel Requirements.
The Code of Ethics is an expression of goals and contains instructions on record-keeping, health and breeding practices, advertising and sales, education, and exhibitor/breeder relations. It is expected that all breeders who register their litters and dogs with UKC have these same goals in mind and, in fact, go above and beyond them in their quest to produce healthy, good-tempered dogs and to place them in suitable homes.
It is through the actions of these breeders that the UKC Total Dog philosophy is maintained. Therefore, we recommend that everyone interested in finding a new dog to purchase them from a responsible breeder who follows these doctrines.
In the best interests of all dogs and their breeders, United Kennel Club strongly recommends that prospective dog owners obtain them only from breeders who follow responsible breeding practices. They should make every effort to visit the breeders’ facilities and see the dams and the sires, if possible, of their litters.
With the growing popularity of dogs being sold over the internet, it is also important to look for more than a pleasant website; again, try to arrange a visit to the place where the puppies were born and meet the dams and sires.
It is toward these goals that the United Kennel Club recommends that dogs and puppies not be purchased from pet stores or commercial facilities often referred to as “puppy mills”, where the overall health and well-being of the animals may not be the primary objective.
