Wayne's Words - Here We Go Again

The hideous PAWS legislation was killed, at least for now, because of the tremendous support of reasonable and responsible sportsmen, hunters, and dog owners. How positive to think that individual houndsmen united to defeat legislation backed by the two giant organizations that sponsored PAWS: the Humane Society of the United States and the American Kennel Club.

You should all be proud of your work, but be aware that these same animal rights supporters are at work again, this time in Pennsylvania. Interesting that they choose the home state of Rick Santorum, who they worked with to draft PAWS. This new HSUS-backed bill would make it nearly impossible to breed and raise hounds. When these groups get one state to pass legislation, the other states often fall in line. They lost the national referendum so they are now trying something new, one state at a time.

The United Kennel Club has teamed up with the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance to fight this new legislation from being the newest PAWS. Please take the time to read this letter that we co-authored with the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and do your part today.

Dear UKC Sportsman:

Your help is needed immediately to defeat the most extensive threat to sporting dog enthusiasts we’ve ever seen.
Please, TAKE ACTION TODAY!

The issue focuses on a proposed series of Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture regulations. The regulations were drafted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and have the support of the notorious Humane Society of the United States. The regulations make it impossible to breed and raise packs of hounds or other hunting dogs. A complete breakdown of the regulations can be found at www.ussportsmen.org, and click on the Pennsylvania story.

These regulations dictate requirements that are utterly unrealistic, will cost you thousands of dollars and, unless you follow them to the letter, will make you a criminal! Among the inane requirements:
- Cleaning records of housing facilities be kept on a daily basis and all facilities, including feed and water bowls and dog boxes be cleaned and sanitized daily.
- Supervised exercise for each dog be provided daily and that exercise may not subject dogs to getting muddy or wet; daily records must be maintained of exercise, as well.
- Walls (not fencing) must separate each dog cage from the adjacent cage.
The regulations go on for dozens of pages and get worse the further you read!

The United Kennel Club has been a long time partner with the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. Through its Sporting Dog Defense Coalition, USSA is mounting a campaign to kill the dangerous Pennsylvania regulations. UKC is 100% behind this effort, and other dog enthusiasts groups have already come on board, including the American Brittany Club, Masters of Foxhounds, American Field Magazine, the Pennsylvania Federation of Dog Clubs, and more.

We’re asking you to do two things:
First, call Governor Rendell immediately at (717) 787-2500. Ask Governor Rendell to put a stop to these over burdensome regulations.

Follow up with a short letter or fax. Send the letter to:
Hon. Edward G. Rendell, Governor
225 Maine Capitol Building
Harrisburg PA 17120

Or fax your letter to: (717) 772-8284 (fax)

Next, please make a campaign contribution to fight the regulations. USSA has hired two lobbyists in Harrisburg to help us coordinate our campaign. They have also begun a massive series of mailings to Pennsylvania hunters in an effort to put sufficient pressure on the Governor’s office to back off. The campaign is budgeted at $55,000 and the money must be spent starting now.

Your contribution of $25, $50, $100 or more will help cover the expense that it will take to flood the governor and ensure that these onerous regulations fail and do not appear in your state. Please send it to: The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, 801 Kingsmill Parkway, Columbus OH 43229. Make the check payable to U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and note “PA Dog Regulation Campaign” on the memo line. A contribution may also be made via the USSA website.

THERE IS NO TIME TO SPARE!

Do it today. The Pennsylvania anti-dog hunting regulations must be stopped in their tracks.

Sincerely,
Wayne R. Cavanaugh,
President
United Kennel Club
Sincerely,
Walter P. Pidgeon, Jr., Ph.D, CAE, CFRE
President and CEO

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever was developed in late 19th century Scotland and England primarily by crossing Flat- and Wavy-coated Retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniels, and a red Setter. The Golden was bred by British aristocrats to be a dual purpose dog, able to retrieve waterfowl and upland game birds and also to be a companion. The Golden Retriever's friendly disposition, attractive appearance, and high level of trainability have made this breed one of the most popular in the United States. The Golden Retriever was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1956.
