United Kennel Club Announces the Recognition of the Miniature American Shepherd
KALAMAZOO, MICH. Dec., 29, 2014 – United Kennel Club welcomes the Miniature American Shepherd to its list of recognized breeds, effective January 1, 2015. The breed will be in the Herding Group.
The Miniature American Shepherd was originally accepted into the Canine Developmental Health and Performance Registry approximately five years ago, and recently fulfilled the requirements for full UKC recognition.
The Miniature American Shepherd is a small to medium size herding dog that originated in the United States with the Australian Shepherd. They are a versatile herding dog that became especially popular for their smaller size, intelligence and loyalty. This highly versatile breed makes an excellent athlete, with superior intelligence and a willingness to please. They are a loyal companion and a biddable worker, which is evident in their alert, attentive and intelligent expression. The Miniature American Shepherd is intelligent, primarily a working dog of strong herding and guardian instincts. It is an excellent companion that is versatile and easily trained, performing its assigned tasks with style and enthusiasm.

It is undeniable that there are UKC registered Australian Shepherds that fit the Miniature American Shepherd breed standard, and owners who would prefer to have their dog(s) registered as such. Owners of these dogs who wish to change their dog’s breed designation will be given the opportunity to do so, using the breed transfer form located on the UKC website here.
