FAQs for X-Bred Coonhounds

Does UKC register cross-bred coonhounds?
As of December 15, 2014, UKC will have a category available for cross-bred coonhounds. They will be referred to as X-Bred Coonhounds.

What does the “X” stand for?
The “X” in X-Bred Coonhound represents;
    · a coonhound with known mixed crosses
    · a coonhound with an unknown pedigree
    · a coonhound from another registry not accepted by UKC
    · a coonhound that is considered off color for the breed

What qualifies as an X-Bred Coonhound?
Any offspring resulting from the breeding of two different UKC Registered Coonhound Breeds will qualify as an X-Bred Coonhound.

Any offspring resulting from the breeding of an X-Bred Coonhound to any UKC Registered Coonhound will qualify as an X-Bred Coonhound.

Any offspring resulting from the breeding of an X-Bred Coonhound to an X-Bred Coonhound will qualify as an X-Bred Coonhound.

Any Single Registered Coonhound with unknown parentage will qualify as an X-Bred Coonhound.

Any Single Registered Coonhound with known parentage but not from an approved registry will qualify as an X-Bred Coonhound. Approved registries include PKC and AKC.

Any UKC recognized purebred coonhound with a disqualifying color for its breed will qualify as an X-Bred Coonhound.

What are the approved coonhound registries for single registration?
Approved registries include PKC and AKC.

What Coonhound Breeds does UKC register?
United Kennel Club registers the American Black & Tan Coonhound, American Leopard Hound, Bluetick Coonhound, English Coonhound, Plott Hound, Redbone Coonhound, and Treeing Walker Coonhound.

Can an X-Bred Coonhound participate in the Performance Rewards Program?
Yes, a UKC registered X-Bred Coonhound is eligible to participate in the Performance Rewards Program. Please Note: All Performance Rewards Program Rules and Fees apply.

What types of events can an X-Bred Coonhound participate in?
A UKC permanently registered X-Bred Coonhound is eligible to participate in any working/performance type events that any UKC recognized coonhound breed is eligible to participate in.

Can an X-Bred Coonhound participate in a Bench Show or an All-Breed Conformation Show?
No, a UKC registered X-Bred Coonhound is not eligible to participate in any conformation type events.

Will my UKC registered X-Bred Coonhound be eligible for breed awards?
No.

Will my UKC registered X-Bred Coonhound be eligible for the Top Current and Historical Reproducers List?
Yes.

How will the offspring be counted on the reproducers list?
All UKC registered X-Bred Coonhound offspring and UKC registered purebred offspring of a UKC purebred registered coonhound will be counted together for their total reproducing percentages.

Can I tell what breeds have been crossed in my UKC X-Bred Coonhound’s pedigree?
Yes, any UKC Registered Coonhound in the pedigree of a UKC registered X-Bred Coonhound will have the breeds’ abbreviation printed next to the dogs’ UKC Registration Number. Example: U123,456 TW

What are the UKC Coonhound Breed Abbreviations?
The UKC Coonhound Breed Abbreviations are as follows;
American Black & Tan Coonhound B&T
American Leopard Hound ALH
Bluetick Coonhound BLU
English Coonhound ENG
Plott Hound PLT
Redbone Coonhound RED
Treeing Walker Coonhound TW
X-Bred Coonhound X

Can I register my dog from PKC with UKC?
Yes, you can submit a Coonhound Single Registration Application for consideration. Please Note: If your dog is registered with PKC as a Cross-Bred dog, it would be considered an X-Bred Coonhound with UKC if accepted for registration.

Where do I mail my Coonhound Single Registration Application?
Mail your Coonhound Single Registration Application directly to: United Kennel Club, Coonhound Single Registration Department, 100 E Kilgore Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49002.

How do I register my X-Bred Coonhound Litter?
You will need to submit a Coonhound Litter Registration Application to register your X-Bred Coonhound litter. Please Note: All regular Litter Registration Rules and Fees apply.

Where do I mail my X-Bred Coonhound Litter Registration Application?
Mail your X-Bred Coonhound Litter Registration Application to: United Kennel Club, X-Bred Coonhound Litter Registration Department, 100 E Kilgore Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49002.

What if I have one pup (or more) in a litter out of two UKC Purebred Registered Coonhounds of the same breed that is considered off-color for the breed?
You would need to submit a UKC Coonhound Litter Registration Application and indicate on the application that you have a pup(s) that should be registered as an X-Bred Coonhound within that litter. The application will provide you with space to indicate the number of males and females that should be registered as UKC Purebred Coonhounds and the number of males and females that should be registered as UKC X-Bred Coonhounds.

Do I get the same kind of UKC Registration Certificate for my X-Bred Coonhound?
Yes, the UKC Registration Certificate and Pedigree of an X-Bred Coonhound will be the same as the ones issued for purebred registered coonhounds. The only difference will be that the dog’s UKC Registration Number will begin with an ‘X’ and the breed abbreviations will be printed next to each UKC Registered ancestor in the pedigree. (See breed abbreviations listed above.)

Can I have a ‘PR’ (Purple Ribbon) X-Bred Coonhound?
No. Purple Ribbon is a unique designation issued to a dog with a minimum of three generations of registered ancestors of the same breed.

Can hounds in the X-Bred category ever achieve pure-bred status?
Yes. Offspring produced as a result of breeding an X-Bred Coonhound will be considered eligible for pure-bred status if;
    · The UKC Chartered Breed Association for that breed has voted to accept breed transfers. (Note: will be voted on annually.)
    AND
    · The offspring’s’ pedigree is 80% pure. (Meaning, not more than one dog in the third generation is of a breed different than the breed being applied for)
    AND
    · The dog meets the UKC Breed Standard for that breed as interpreted by UKC.

What if the UKC Chartered Breed Association votes to NOT accept breed transfers?
The UKC Chartered Breed Associations will vote annually as to whether or not to accept breed transfers within their breed. If they choose not to accept breed transfers the dog will remain registered as an X-Bred Coonhound.

What can I do if the National Breed Association never accepts breed transfers?
We recommend becoming a member of your breeds National Breed Association so that you may vote and have a voice in the decision making process.


How much is it for a breed transfer?
The cost of a breed transfer is $50.00.
