August 14, 2014. Kalamazoo MI. United Kennel Club announces that, effective immediately, bitches in heat shall be eligible to participate in all UKC licensed Pointing Dog Field Trial competitions. This should not be confused with UFTA or NSTRA sanctioned events, which are governed by their own entry rules.

The rules regarding the entry of bitches in heat will specifically state the following.
Bitches in Heat
Bitches in heat shall be eligible to participate in all UKC licensed Pointing Dog Field Trial competition. Any owner or handler of a bitch in heat shall inform the Field Trial Secretary and the Judges, to include the Head Judge for the Class and category of competition for which the bitch in heat has been entered, of the dog’s estrus condition.

Bitches in heat shall be run at the end of the running order for a designated concourse or shall alternatively be run on separate area of the course in the discretion of the Judge(s) for the particular concourse(s) to which the dog has been assigned, so as to attempt to avoid and/or minimize distraction to other dogs.

If running in braces competition, or if named to a barrage, a bitch in heat shall be assigned to run in brace with another female dog or alternatively shall be braced with a female bye dog, approved by the Judges.

Owners of bitches in heat shall exercise discretion not to distract or interfere with other dogs with the presence of the bitch in heat, and shall keep her properly contained and away from other dogs when on or around the field trial grounds, except when the judge calls for the bitch in heat to compete. The fact that the bitch is in heat shall not be considered by any Judge in judging the dog’s performance.

A full rule revision is being finalized at this time and will be available for public comment in the coming weeks. A tentative deadline of January 1 has been set for the effective date of the revised UKC Pointing Dog Field Trial Rules.
