Portuguese Pointer Club Fall Trials

The Portuguese Pointer Club of America held its most recent UKC field trials and TANs on September 24 & 25, 2011 at the Sugar Brook Field Trial Area in Plainfield, CT. This was the Club’s first event using this venue and first time hosting two consecutive days of trialing. Despite some heavy late summer cover, unexpected warm and muggy weather and an unbelievable mosquito and biting fly invasion, the weekend proved to be another successful event for the PPCA.
On Saturday, new UKC field trial judge Carl Correra laid out a somewhat challenging continuous course, planted with liberated bobwhite quail. The dogs worked the heavy cover well but unfortunately, conditions weren’t favorable to producing many qualifying runs. We were all very happy to congratulate Kay Fouhey and her English setter male, TAN Bittersweet’s White Wizard (Nigel), who produced the only qualifying run of the day. Nigel really put in the work for his retrieve in the heat but did a wonderful job, earning him First Place in the Gun Dog class.
We only had one young dog entered for the TAN on Saturday. We were happy to congratulate Kathy Trela and her English Pointer female, Solivia’s Just My Cuppa Tea (Jaz) for doing a beautiful job to earn Jaz her TAN title.
Sunday brought more of the same weather-wise, despite a forecast of rain. We all were wishing for a bit of precipitation by mid-day with the thermometer passing 80°! Judge Donna Pageau set out a new course for the day and the field trial gods smiled favorably upon more dogs on Sunday. This resulted in five dogs qualifying, with First Place going to club member Luis Neves and his Portuguese pointer male Betinho do Choupal (Beto). Reserve went to club member Todd Stowell with his Portuguese pointer male TAN Espectaculo Espectacular do Berço do Basalto (Azore). Luis also picked up a ribbon and medallion for his Portuguese pointer female TAN CH Sina for her Pass with Honor run. Also doing an outstanding job were first-timers Kathy Duffy and Karen Oliver who qualified their English Pointer littermates, Cinnakerry’s What’s the Point (Quiz) and Cinnakerry’s Whatever Lola Wants (Lola). Based on their feedback, I think they’re now hooked on UKC trialing!
I would like to thank all the PPCA members - many travelling from Canada and other states - who attended and made this event a success. We’re already planning for next year’s field events and hope to be able to award some folks the honor of New Title Holders then!
