We had a Hunt Test last Friday night. There had not been one at the club for a few years. We were not sure what to expect.
We had nine dogs, of which four passed. Grand Nites we thought would pass did not. Registered dogs we did not think would pass did. We had some dogs tree multiple coons, and some tree slick. We had some dogs change their mind about hunting and go back to the truck and clubhouse for a burger.
We had older experienced hunters and young newer hunters. We had coon hunters who were not members of the club volunteer to be inspectors. They did it because they have participated in HTX’s and enjoyed it.
When the night was over, everyone felt this was what coon hunting is all about. We had some laughs, told some stories, passed on some memories, got to know fellow hunters we did not know, and watched some hounds do what they were bred to do. Everyone seemed to have a good time. There was no arguing, no pressure, just a good time. People were asking when the next HTX is.
