Purina Points Event - I had the privilege of spending a few days with a very friendly and down-home group of folks in Clarksville, Arkansas during their State Championship weekend. The event was well attended where I got the chance to meet and visit with folks in the likes of old-timer JT Keene, Assn. President; Mike Wallin, Event Coordinator; Ron Cooper and many others. I really enjoyed these visits and thank them all for their hospitality. Also thanks to Ronnie Keen for allowing myself and our UKC Field Rep from Arkansas; Dave Hankel to tag along on his cast on Friday night. We saw some good dog work out of all the dogs on the cast and were privileged with a friendly group of of guys handling them.
It remained cloudy for the most part of both days which made for nearly perfect conditions for the event. Also, inducted into the Arkansas Coon Hunters Hall of Fame on this weekend was Mr. Glenn Young of Knobel, Arkansas. Read more about Mr. Glenn following the event results listed below. Congratulations to all the winners and a special thanks to all who had a hand in organizing and conducting a great Championship Weekend!

Arkansas State Coon Hunters Hall of Fame Inductee - Glenn Young
Donnie King (left) presenting Plaque of Honor to Glenn Young and his wife Joan.

The 2012 inductee into the Arkansas State Coonhunters Association's Coonhunters Hall of Fame is 76 years old; he has farmed for 50 years in Clay County, retiring 3 or 4 years ago. He has been married to his wife, Joann for almost 60 years. He and Joann have raised 5 very courteous, polite and loyal sons. Their sons are Vincent, Allen, Bill, Rob and Jeff. Allen and Bill passed away a few years ago. His son, Jeff is following in his dad's footsteps into the sport of coon hunting, making his own contribution for the betterment of the sport.

I have personally known this year's inductee since the 1960's and have coon hunted with him fairly regular since the early 1970's. I am not exactly sure how long he has coon hunted, but I do know that when he started coon hunting, he had to be carried on the shoulders of his older brother, Leo. So, that would put it well over 70 years. He is one of the very few coon hunters that I have known in my life time that I have enough confidence in his knowledge of knowing what a coon dog should be, that I would be willing to buy a dog on his word only.

He has spent his entire life coon hunting in the Dave Donaldson Wildlife Management Area in Northeast Arkansas, or as he would call it "the Black River bottoms". Which he knows like the back of his hand. Several years ago, while hunting with him in the Black River bottoms and knowing we were a long way from the truck, I ask him how far we were from the truck and he said "about 2 miles or a little over". I pulled out my new GPS (global positioning system), turned it on and when I got a signal it showed we were 2.1miles from the pickup. He could do this at about any given time in the hunt. This is how well
he knew these bottoms.

Some of the names of the best dogs that he has owned and the foundation of some of today's top dogs are: Millie, Jiggs, Major, Stoney, Stud, Chase, Jake and Shine. He has personally pleasure hunted with many ofthe top breeders, trainers and hunters ofthe coon dog world. Some ofthese names are: Frank Giddings, James Merchant, Timothy Ball, Don Ranke, Billy Stinson, Robert Sheppard, Don Risley, Pete DE Andre, Burt McAfee, Gary Elliott and Skeet Winfrey.

His life time of breeding, training and promoting many of the top coon hounds as well as knowing what a top coon hound should be more than qualifies him as an inductee candidate. So, the 2012 inductee into the Arkansas State Coonhunters Association Coonhunters Hall of Fame is Mr. Glen Young from Knobel, Arkansas.
