With the summer months now nearly upon us Hunting Beagle Events will slow down a bit. So will the points being earned in the Inaugural All Star Series. At least for a few months. Nonetheless, the action in the series so far has been as hot as the dog days of summer. If the competitive races in each region up to now are any indication we are in for an exciting finish right down to the wire. No region currently has an overall shoe-in regional winner nor can we declare a locked-in Chase spot for any hound.

Here's the latest on the series, including the most recent scoreboard compiled on May 31st. We've also taken our first peak at the wild card picture. Check it out!

All Star Series Report
Allen Gingerich

Kick Moves to #1 in the East
A month ago Kick showed up in fourth place overall in the East. This month he now officially more than doubled his points and takes over the top spot. He didn’t actually earn any points in the last month but rather; was the victim of a late report where he had not yet received credit for two wins at the Virginia State Championship held back in March. Nonetheless, he now officially leads all contenders in the East.

Crowder’s Stone MTN Rex came out of nowhere this month cruising to within 15 points of the leader. Four cast wins, including three category wins, during the month of May for Rex has catapulted him into contention for the Chase. Chopper and Money Man were both credited with 20 points each to remain in contention. Chopper was our official leader for the past couple months but has given it up, at least for the moment, to Kick. Money Man is the only hound to have started off the year being in and remaining in one of the top four Chase spots.

The hounds in the East are kicking it in gear and making a fantastic race out of it. There are several more hounds in very good positions to give the current leaders a run for their money. The question is; can the current big dogs of the east - Kick, Rex, Chopper and Money hold them off?

Hoosier Spring Classic Win Big Boost For Bo Shembechler
The Midwest race started off with a bang this year with their leaders posting the bar high (points) early on. For the last two months, however, Lighting and Sloppy Joe have not added any more cast wins and yet surprisingly hang onto the lead. The Iowa hound – Gotta Go I Go also did not earn any more points in the past month but clings on to a Chase spot.

The Midwest’s hound of the month is Bo Shembechler out of East Leroy, Michigan. Bo has been one of those hounds that was in reach of the early leaders for the past few months. His fourth Champion win earned at the Hoosier Spring Classic boosted him into contention and within a cast win of taking over the lead.

The dog days of summer will obviously slow things down for a few months. But it may also allow for a few hounds to quietly sneak into contention with a cast win or two. Regardless, I predict the race in the Midwest is far from over and we could very easily see some new names come into play before this deal is done. It’s a super tight race between about 20 hounds right now.

Six-Pack Barney On Board
With Skamp remaining as the leader, Lefty and Gus are still hanging on in the Mountain Region. Lefty did add another category win and 15 points to move up one spot. Last month Skamp was given honors of sharing “most points earned in the All-Star Series” but surrenders that honor for now.

The big mover this month is Six-Pack Barney. He doubled up on points to move all the way up to take over the reserve spot. Credit for four category wins gives Barney a total of 90 points and only 20 behind Skamp. All four of his wins came in his home state for the Six-Pack hound out of Grafton, West Virginia.

Also moving into contention this month is Heat-Em-Up Black Phantom. The Salem, West Virginia hound earned a category win in May to edge Hagy’s Gizmo out of a Chase spot. Gizmo and Six-Pack Duke currently sit just out of the top four but a couple wins by either one or both would quickly shuffle things around again in the Mountain Region.

Competition at its Best in Western Region
Ackley Improved out of Dixon, Missouri leads all hounds in the All-Star Series now for most points earned (120). Not by much but nevertheless his cast win edge over Regional Leaders Kick (East) and Skamp (Mountain) gives him that honor this month.

More importantly, however, is the fact that Ackley is not directly competing with Kick, Skamp or any other Regional Leaders for that matter. What matters is; only those hounds in the Western Region. A region that just happens to currently have the distinction of the top four hounds all having at least 100 points in the bank and looking to bust his tail!

A 30 point month for Heartbreaker moves him up from fourth to second and within five points of Ackley. Captain Awesome hangs in third place with his 110 series points. The new hound in the race this month is DT Mac’s Max. He is credited with another 30 points and bumped out Party Time At Six.

A look at the current standings promises the Western Region WILL be an exciting race right down to the wire. A race that includes a plethora of All-Star hounds with a legitimate shot at getting in before year’s end. Winning a region is one thing and will be a fantastic feat. But getting in to a top four spot in the region for a chance to compete in the All-Star Chase next year will be a fantastic accomplishment in itself.

Junior All-Stars
Firewater Tank regained the lead in the East over last month’s front-runner Darren Hollow Star Gaze. Tank is credited with 35 points and now leads all Juniors for the most points earned (80). The Junior race in the Eastern Region is shaping up to maybe include several others before the year is out. Outlaw Wildman and Forge Hills Chead are the first ones in position to take a crack at Tank and Gaze.

Shenango’s Shooter out of Ohio leads the Juniors in the Midwest Region. Only two other juniors in the region are currently shown with a cast win this year to test Shooter’s 25 series points. This is very unusual for this part of the country when it comes to young dogs doing well in the hunts. That will likely change and we’ll see several others contending before the year is out.

Hammerdown Insane Cane took the lead this month over T-Bone Tina. Cane took a Second Place Win recently to finish out to HBCH. This gives him a mere edge of five points as the Junior leader in the Mountain Region. T-Bone Tina and White River Hammer are tied for the reserve spot. Gun Powder and Lead Elley Mae posts a respectable two-cast-win effort to date as the only other junior challenger so far.

Primetime Tebow continues to lead the Western Region without any points earned in the last month. At least not officially. Rambling Redneck started the year off in a contender spot but has recently been bumped out by Heat Em Up Dyna who claims the reserve spot this month. Like the All-Age race the juniors in the Western Region are looking to make a dandy out of it with Redneck, Stinger, Karl and Patches well within reach.

All-Age Wildcards
The All-Star Series is set up with two separate goals in mind. 1) Win your region and achieve top honors and/or 2) finish in the top four of your region. Both will qualify a hound for the 2014 All-Star Chase. For those that do not make the cut as one of the top four within their respective region, there’s one other opportunity. That is… four total wild card spots are available to fill up a 20-dog field in the Chase.

Now halfway through the Inaugural All-Star Series we might start looking at the wild card picture. Although I’m pretty sure a lot will change between now and the end of the year, we’ll peak around anyway and see what it would look like if the series ended today. Remember we only need four more to fill up our field and they may come from any one or more regions.

Scoping out the current standings it’s not surprising that currently all four wild cards would come out of the very competitive Western Region. Those boys are serious about this race and really bringing that part of the country to light. Maybe it was just me but when you think of the states that have been very active in UKC beagling throughout the years it would likely be the likes of Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana. And they have been. But the beaglers in the western part of the country may have for too long kind of quietly slipped under the radar, if you will. A trip to NHBA Days in Manes, Missouri earlier this year certainly opened my eyes to the fact that this part of the country is as strong or stronger as any.

We got off track here slightly but back to the wild card picture – right now if your hound has 80 or more points and you are not otherwise in the top four of your region you would be in the Chase as a wild card. Calvin Mings leads the Wild Card category right now with 90 points on Party Time At Six. The Iowa team of Adreon and Adreon are tied with the Bakers and Siberts (80 pts) with Iowa Joker, Pop A Top and Radar. If the race ended today the Western Region would be very well represented with eight hounds in a 20 dog field for the 2014 All-Star Chase. We’ll see how it shakes out as we move forward.

Junior Wildcards
The only difference between the Junior Chase and All-Age Chase is that the field is only half the size (10). That means we will also only allow for two wild cards. Otherwise, the particulars are similar.

Right now the junior wild card picture looks like 45 or more points is the number. Rambling Redneck out of the Western Region would be the first one in with his 55 points. Rambling Stinger (Western Region) and Outlaw Wild Man (Eastern Region) would be tied for the reserve wild card spot.
