French Brittany Gun Dog Association, Inc

2008 U.S. National Epagneul Breton
Specialty Confirmation Show
March 8th, 2008

This year's French Brittany Gun Dog Association's (FBGDA) National Specialty Conformation Show was held at the Holiday Inn Holidome in Salina, Kansas. We were honored to have the Honorable judge Regis Toulet from Ossun France judge our event. He judges shows, field trials, and is a qualified confirmer in France. Regis did a excellent job of educating the group by explaining his evaluation of the dogs to the handlers and the audience.

The event was a great success. There were 42 dogs entered in the National Specialty. The event was held inside in a banquet room due to the cold weather outside which made for a enjoyable afternoon.

The highlight of the show is always the Junior Showmanship handlers. This gets the youngsters involved at a early age. This year we had 5 handlers. Regis worked with each of the youngsters to insure they had a good time. Kalli Shipley was awarded Best Junior Handler.

Anne Johnson volunteered to be our Show Secretary and did a wonderful job keeping track of everything. Also on the show committee we had Bob Olson, Cindy Chase, and Randy Meester thanks to all for their help. We are looking for volunteers for next year, March, 2009, in Iowa, if you would like to help let Randy Meester , or any of the Board of Directors know.

Our National Best of Breed winner was CH TAN Topperlyn Gallant Bodacious (Leo ) handled by Glen Gunderson and owned by Anne Johnson. In order to win Best of Breed Leo had to win the Champion Class and then he beat out the Best of Winners, Hite’s Misissippi Bandit owned and handled by Jeff Hites. For the first time in three years, the winner of the National Specialty Show was an American bred dog. Fantastic! “Leo” was bred by Topperlyn Kennels, owners Lynda Kieres and Christopher Kieres. Congratulations are due the breeder, owner, and handler, as Leo had very stiff competition, particularly in the last two rounds of judging.

Due to the fact that the two top winning dogs were USA bred ( albeit from primarily French and Belgium stock initially ), we think it appropriate to highlight (as follows ) these two dogs and their owners a bit more than usual for our magazine.

The NBOB ( National Best of Breed ) , TR, CH. TAN TopperLyn Gallant Bodacious (Leo ) comes from a line of exceptional dogs. Sired by NBOB GRCH TAN Beau de l’Hospitalier ( Belgium ), his line goes back to two times World Winner CH Tramontane de l ‘Hospitalier ( grandmother ). His uncle, UK CH Tchao de lHospitalier at Brittyhill, was Britain’s first Full Brittany Champion and twice Best of Breed winner at the prestigious Cruft’s Dog Show at Windsor. Tchao also sired the first Dual CH in Britain, Dual CH Tournesol Toutou at Bryantscroft. Leo’s grandfather, Omer de la Vallee de Boel, ( France ) is a Recommended Trialer who has produced four dogs who also carry the title of Trialer, two of whom are also Recommended. One of these dogs, TR CH Robine des Pigenettes, also has a CH CS IB title. Leo is the first Epagneul Breton sired by a USA National Best of Breed winner. And, to have also achieved that same title. He is also the first USA , NBOB Epagneul Breton to earn a Field Title. He is a true , dual purpose, Epagneul Breton and he lives in America. God Bless America!.

The Best of Winners ( BOW ) Epagneul Breton, which in this case is actually the runner-up to NBOB, was Hites Mississippi Bandit. He is owned and was handled by Jeff Hites. Bandit was bred in the USA by Jim and Phillip Sigillito. Jeff has shown Bandit only sparingly , compared to the opportunities of Leo, but in a show in St. Louis, MO in 2006, Bandit was Judged by Jacques-Francois Bordet ,also of France, and did comparably as well as he did in Salina, KS in 2008. He is a fine looking, superbly conformed black and black roan, Epagneul Breton. Bandit’s breeding ( genetics ) , like most Epagneul Bretons , is somewhat diverse in lineage. His pedigree contains a lot of du Hameau de Sorny ancestory ( France ) as well as some St. Lubin ( France) , as well as the USA breedings of the Sigillito’s. Bandit, like Leo, is a gorgeous Epagneul Breton dog. Bandit was also the winner of the Total Dog Award from UKC. This award is a non-point award given the UKC to a dog that does very well in the field trial and in the show. Bandit is a dog anyone should be proud to own.

Congratulations to all of the winners this year!!
